OSAWATOMIE — When he left home one evening in January, his mother told Osawatomie High School student Brandon Oakes to buckle his seat belt. He followed his mother’s orders. The Osawatomie Journal reported that later that evening, Oakes lost control after his Dodge Durango hit a deer and his vehicle rolled over down a snow-covered embankment. When his vehicle came to a rest, he was hanging upside from his seat belt. His two passengers were also wearing seat belts and they unbuckled and walked away from the wreck. Oakes told the Journal that many teens think seat belts are for wimps. He strongly disagrees. His mother Marla Berry said she’s thankful he listened to her advice.
