OTTAWA — The 10th annual Walk Kansas – ninth annual for Franklin County — begins next month and there’s a new challenge that sums up the adage of when the walking gets tough, the tough get walking. The six-member teams can do the usual distance equal to the width of Kansas – 423 miles — over the eight-week period, Frontier Extension District’s Rebecca McFarland said. But she says there’s a new challenge is for serious walkers; Door Number 2 is a distance equal to walking around the perimeter of Kansas, or 1,200 miles. There are some Franklin County teams that hit the 423-milestone before the half-way mark of Walk Kansas, and they’re eager to go for the longer distance, she said. Teams also get credit for eating more fruits and vegetables in the program, which promotes healthier living and habits.
