VASSAR–Is the Pomona Dam safe? The answer is a somewhat qualified “yes.” Douglas Crum is the Dam Safety Program Manager with the Kansas City District of the Army Corps of Engineers and he says one concern is possible seepage of water under the dam. As far as safety is concerned, the dam is put in a Category 3, which means it is moderate to high risk. Crum says despite that perhaps ominous sounding rating, the Corps is constantly testing and evaluating what needs to be done to resolve any safety issues to the public.
