POMONA LAKE — Is the Pomona Lake dam safe? The answer to that question is a qualified “yes.” The Kansas City District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been testing the dam to make sure it’s stable but Douglas Crum, dam safety program manager, said there are a few things that concern him and deserve further study. A recent Corps study of the dam puts the dam in a Category 3, rating it as moderate to high risk, he said. There is some indication of seepage and higher-than-expected water pressure on the dam, he said. The Corps will continue to perform technical tests on the dam and lake over the next five years, and annual inspections. The Corps could install additional monitoring instruments at the dam and conduct a stability analysis.
