OSAWATOMIE — The Osawatomie Journal reported that members of the Osawatomie Elks Lodge laughed when Mike Peace proposed a squirrel hunting tournament. They kept laughing until 20 two-member teams showed up from as far away as Wichita and Missouri to hunt squirrels. Peace said he wanted to try something different and wasn’t sure how it would go and he was pleased by the turnout. It succeeded so well they’ll try it next year, he said. However if others laughed, the lodge’s head cook Marc Cochrane was ready for the squirrels that hunters brought in. He had scanned the Internet for a variety of recipes including squirrel wings, squirrel pot pie and biscuits and squirrel gravy.
