TOPEKA–The Kansas Senate Ethics and Elections Committee yesterday passed a weakened version of Secretary of State’s Kris Kobach’s bill to require a photo id and proof of citizenship for voters. Senators removed a section of Kobach’s bill that would criminally prosecute allegations of voter fraud. The committee also postponed the start date to 2013. The Kansas Equality Coalition objected part of the bill that required transgendered individuals to disclose their original and current gender to register to vote. Coalition Lobbyist Thomas Witt said that the disclosure could be dangerous for the transgendered people to “out” themselves when they register.
