GARNETT — A contractor working on Garnett’s water line project appears to have abandoned the project. City manager Joyce Martin said Houck Construction hasn’t done any work for two weeks. The contractor’s crew ran into problems boring underneath the Union Pacific Railroad and stopped work after a heavy snow earlier this month.
She told the Anderson County Review that the company was given an extension for the project through Feb. 26 and hasn’t contacted the city nor has it requested another extension. A deadline for the company to contact the city is Monday, she said. Martin said the city is preparing a claim on the company’s bond in order to hire another contractor to finish the job. The project is partly funded by federal stimulus money. The city is laying a new water line from the Cedar Valley Reservoir directly into the Crystal Lake water treatment facility.
