LAWRENCE–Douglas County has dropped as one of the healthiest counties in Kansas. According to a study by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the county has dropped four spots to number eight. The county dropped dramatically in the Physical Environment category. The category measures environmental quality and the built environment. Douglas County last year was number four, this year, 88. The healthiest counties are Riley, Johnson, Mitchell, Coffey, Ellis, Kingman, Pottawatomie, and Douglas. The unhealthiest were Cherokee, Montgomery, Wyandotte, Bourbon, and Allen.
