PLEASANTON — The Mine Creek Battlefield State Historic Site will delay the opening of its visitor center exhibits because of maintenance issues. The Kansas State Historical Society said the visitors center will open April 27. When it opens, the visitor center’s houses will be from 10 in the morning to 5 in the evening Wednesday through sSaturday through the last Saturday in October. Admission to the visitor center exhibits is $3 for adults and $1 for students. However, visitors are welcome to tour the battlefield and walk the nature trail from dawn until dusk year-round for free. The Mine Creek battlefield is located near Pleasanton about one-half mile west of the intersection of U.S. 69 and K-52. History experts say the battle of Mine Creek is the largest cavalry charge in the Civil War and the largest battle in Kansas. The battle was a Union victory and about 2,800 mounted federal troopers destroyed an 8,000-member Confederate army commanded by Missouri Gen. Sterling Price, who was fleeing after a failed attempt to retake his state from Union control.
