WASHINGTON — A plaque honoring former U.S. Sen. Bob Dole was to be dedicated at the World War II Memorial in Washington this morning. U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts of Kansas was to speak at the ceremony. Dole was severely wounded while leading a group of soldiers in Italy during World War II. After he was elected to Congress and the Senate, Dole worked for American veterans, and after his retirement was a leader in creating the World War II Memorial. Former NBC anchor Tom Brokaw, who wrote the book “The Greatest Generation”’ will be emcee for the ceremony. Other dignitaries include Vice President Joe Biden, U.S. senator and fellow World War II veteran Daniel Inouye of Hawaii, and Dole’s wife, former U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole.
