HILLSDALE LAKE — HILLSDALE LAKE — Paola school district officials e-mailed alerts to parents about an anhydrous ammonia spill that occurred near Hillsdale Elementary School Wednesday afternoon. The Miami County Sheriff’s office said the leak came from an overturned anhydrous ammonia tank near west 255th Street and Columbia road. While a farmer was working in a field, the tank turned over after the tractor hitch broke, the sheriff’s office said. A hose ruptured , releasing about 4,000 pounds of anhydrous ammonia into the air. Spring Hill firefighters used a hose to knock down the vapors, and they shut off the valve. Highway and rail traffic in the area was halted during the leak, the sheriff’s office said. There were no injuries. School officials said the leak posed no danger to students.
