OVERLAND PARK — Nationally-known topiary artist Pearl Fryar will speak and sculpt a tree from 4 to 6 Saturday in the Craig Community Auditorium at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park. The presentation is a fundraiser for the Center for Equitable Education. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children under 17. will also do a similar presentation from 10:30 to 12:30 Saturday at the Afrikan-Centered Education Collegium campus in Kansas City, Mo. When the Fryars sought to buy a house in an all-white neighborhood of Bishopville, S.S., 25 years ago, neighbors tried to discourage them, who told them black people didn’t keep up their yards. Instead, they won the Bishopville “Yard of the Month Award,” and he began creating his tree sculpture on his yard.
