WASHINGTON — As Congress battles over budget cuts, Kansas State Extension economist Troy Dumler said the Farm Bill is a prime target. And it’s not a particular propitious time to be looking at a new Farm Bill and solons haggle over steep cuts in most federal spending, he said. The so-called direct payments to producers is the prime of the prime cuts likely, he said. As long as commodity prices remain high, that shouldn’t have as large as an impact, he said. But that might change later, he said. But Dumler said that the funds currently used for direct payments could be shifted over into support for the crop insurance program, an idea he thinks merits consideration.
