RICHMOND – At Monday night’s candlelight vigil, friends and neighbors mourned members of a Richmond family killed and injured in Monday’s early morning fire. Children brought up flowers and teddy bears. Candles were also planted in the yard at their house in the 200 block of West Central Avenue. Sharon Akes, who helped babysit the Schendel and Best children, helped lead the service and called the fire deaths a tragedy. Dustin Caswell, Bryce Schendel’s brother-in-law, said he and his wife spent nearly every weekend with the Schendels. Schendel and three children were killed in the fire. The two surviving family members, mother Ashley Schendel and her daughter, Alexis Best, are physically recovering but are having difficulty coping with the disaster, Caswell said.
