GARNETT — One hundred years after the mysterious death of a Missouri man, his family is offering thanks to the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department. The Anderson County Review relates that then-sheriff Amos Decker went to great lengths to find out the identity of a man who died while traveling through Anderson County. Decker sent a photo of the man’s body to newspapers through the country, and eventually family members identified Henry Hinton. Family members Robert and Mayree Crowder, Salisbury, Mo., visited Garnett recently, where Hinton is buried, to learn more about his mysterious death. Local historian Dorothy Lickteig told the Review thata man named Dorsey told the sheriff that Hinton shot himself during a hunting accident. Dorsey was acquitted of murdering Hinton but was convicted of stealing Hinton’s horses and wagon.
The Crowders said their family wouldn’t have learned of Hinton’s death without Sheriff Decker’s efforts to identify him.
