WASHINGTON — Higher energy costs mean higher fertilizer and chemical costs. But higher energy costs also mean higher costs for running farm tractors. Iowa State Extension economist Mark Hanna said there are several ways to cut fuel costs when using the tractor on the farm. Performing routine maintenance on motors can cut fuel consumption, he said. Other ways include using higher gears and cutting back the throttle while under partial draw load, and correct ballasting, he said.
