MANHATTAN — Some cow-calf producers are enlarging their herds for the first time in a long while because of record-high cattle prices. A Kansas State economist said the cattle industry is still fiercely competitive and producers should make sure they are truly competitive before building up their herds. They need thoroughly look at their feed and grazing costs, said agricultural economist Kevin Dhuyvetter. He recommended using Kansas Farm Management Association data on cow-calf operations as a “benchmark” of that competitiveness.
