TOPEKA – Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer and Attorney General Derek Schmidt will lead the 29th annual Kansas Law Enforcement Memorial ceremony at noon Friday on the south steps of the statehouse. This year’s ceremony will add the names of Franklin County Deputy Samuel Smith and two other officers who died in the line of duty to the state law enforcement memorial wall at the statehouse. The only Franklin County deputy to die in the line of duty, Smith died in a traffic accident July 23 while he was responding to an emergency call. Wildlife and parks ranger Luke Nihart was killed when his all-terrain vehicle crashed as he was patrolling an event at Tuttle Creek State Park near Manhattan June 26. Also being added to the memorial is Santa Fe Railroad special officer George Greenstreet. He was hit by a train in 1912 while looking for thieves who had been stealing from rail cars in the train yard at Edgerton. The Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary of Topeka will hold its annual candlelight vigil at the memorial Thursday night at 8:30.
