MANHATTAN — Kansas State studies indicate that earlier is better when it comes to planting soybeans. Agronomist Kraig Roozeboom said those field trials are showing that earlier planting may mean higher yields. However, that research also suggests that farmers should treat seeds with fungicide and insecticide if they decide to plant earlier than usual. Normally in Kansas, soybeans are planted later this month and into next month. When farmers plant later – especially if they’re double-cropping – they often use fast-maturing beans. Ironically, Roozeboom said those early birds who plant fast-maturing seeds could see an even bigger impact on yields by planting fast-maturing beans than those planting them later in the season.
