OTTAWA — The Ottawa school board will decide how much it wants to reach out and touch someone. Supt. Dean Katt said the board has expressed some concerns that too many groups are using the district telephone notification system for school-related but non-emergency matters. Originally, the system was used to notify parents about weather emergencies or lockdowns at schools but has expanded to include a variety of school- and education-related announcements. The school district has received some complaints from parents, Katt said. The board, worried that some people could start ignoring messages from the system, has decided to come up with a policy for the system, he said. For example, parents could be asked if they want just emergency notifications or other announcements as well, he said.
