GARNETT — The Garnett Planning Commission will have a public hearing Thursday night at 7 at city hall for a special use permit for a proposed elementary school. The Anderson County Review reports that some people are unhappy with the site, which is on U.S. 59 on the north edge of Garnett. The Review reports that critics have said the site should have been next to the Anderson County Junior-Senior High School or that the proposed site takes away prime retail area. The school board took the site by eminent domain when negotiations with the owner fell through. District officials say the proposed site is next to Garnett city utilities, which cuts the cost of building the school. The city annexed the site at the school board’s request. The special use permit is required by city zoning regulations. If planners recommend the special use permit, it goes to the city commission for final approval.
