OTTAWA — Franklin County Sheriff Jeff Curry and his department unveiled a memorial to Deputy Sam Smith Wednesday afternoon on the third floor of the sheriff’s department. The memorial includes a flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol on the day he died.
Smith is the only Franklin County deputy to die in the line of duty. He was killed in a traffic accident near Williamsburg last July while responding to an emergency. His name will be added to a national police memorial in Washington this weekend.
