MEDFORD, Mass. — U.S. agriculture secretary Tom Vilsack said there are legitimate questions about the real causes of spikes in gasoline prices. The spikes are hard on American motorists and it’s difficult for business owners to gauge their budgets when fuel prices bounce up and down. However, he said more competition from biofuels could help eliminate those spikes by providing enough competition to encourage oil companies not to try to jack up prices. He spoke during a tour of a new biofuel Massachusetts facility designed to cheaply convert wastes and grass into ethanol.
