OTTAWA — Franklin County commissioners approved a deal Monday that would allow the county to rent breast pumps to new mothers. Health director Midge Ransom told commissioners there was a need for the breast pumps. Because of a grant, the county lends breast pumps to poor mothers on the Women, Infant, Children program and demand is maxed out. Offering them to other mothers is a useful health incentive as well as saving them trips to Lawrence or Kansas City to rent breast pumps, she said. The county will rent them and in turn rent them to mothers at cost, she said. If the program is successful the county can rent more or even buy them, she said.
