LYNDON — During a hearing in Osage County District Court Tuesday, Judge Philip Fromme refused to allow murder suspect James Kraig Kahler to go to Wichita to take part in a custody hearing regarding his 12-year-old son. The Topeka Capital-Journal reported that if Kahler takes part in next week’s custody hearing, it will only be by phone. Kahler, 48, is charged with killing his wife, Karen Kahler, 44, his teenaged daughters Lauren and Emily, and Karen Kahler’s grandmother Dorothy Wight at Wight’s home in Burlingame over the Thanksgiving holiday in 2009. Kahler’s son Sean, the subject of the custody hearing and fled the house when the shootings occurred, testified against his father during the preliminary hearing in December. Kahler’s jury trial will be Aug. 8 in Osage County District Court in Lyndon.
