OTTAWA — If you’ve noticed more police officers out and about today, you were supposed to. The Ottawa and Wellsville police departments are taking part in a two-week state-wide seatbelt and traffic crackdown centered on Memorial Day. The STEP campaign started today and will run through June 5. Officers will especially be watching for seat belt use and that children are secured in seats and safety seats. The Kansas Department of Transportation, which has given grants to area departments for overtime involved in the campaign, said that because Kansas is more rural, drivers are less likely to wear seatbelts. And KDOT said because of that, crashes in rural areas tend to be deadlier.
