GREELEY — The family of Howard Lickteig recently embarked on a mission to retrieve his lost military medals and to find out the honors awarded to him for his service in Vietnam. Lickteig was drafted when he was 18 into the U.S. Army and served nearly two years in an air cavalry unit in Vietnam and Cambodia. He died of cancer in 2005 when he was 55. The family told the Anderson County Review that he said little about his tours of duty and the medals he received. The family never found his medals or what happened to them. After he died, his mother Florence Lickteig started looking for information on his service record. The Pentagon recently began sending the family copies of Lickteig’s records and medals, which includes the Bronze Star, Air Medal and Army Commendation Medal.
