OTTAWA — The Franklin County Sheriff’s Department has sending deputies this week to help protect the tornado-ravaged town of Reading. Franklin County deputies are manning checkpoints or patrolling in and around Reading, Sheriff Jeff Curry said. The Kansas Highway Patrol has been providing around-the-clock security for Reading and requested help from neighboring law enforcement agencies, Curry said. Nearly all of the public and commercial buildings and most of the homes in Reading were destroyed or damaged by Saturday night’s tornado. One man was killed.
