OTTAWA — Two area banks will collect money for relief efforts in Joplin, Mo. Great Southern Bank in Ottawa and other locations will collect donations for the American Red Cross relief efforts. Great Southern said it has also donated $10,000 to the Red Cross. Peoples Bank will also collect money through June 15th for the American Red Cross in support of recovery efforts in the Joplin area. Peoples Bank will match contributions up to $2,500. Other efforts: The West 15th Street Church of Christ is collecting items to be taken to Joplin Saturday. Items can be dropped off from 9 to noon Friday. Items needed are toiletries, baby items, cleaning supplies and paper items. Advanced Auto Parts is collecting items, which will be delivered Saturday.
Wal-Mart Distribution Center has donated a truck, trailer, and a driver to take donations to Joplin. Donations can be made at the First Assembly of God Church. Grace Community Fellowship Church is collecting good and money for the first “Caravan of Love” heading to Joplin Saturday morning. Working with a church in joplin, the congregation is assembling care kits and looking for other items.
Donations may be dropped off at the old Hawthorne School today until 7 and Friday from 9 to 7. The care kits include new hand towels and washcloths, wide-tooth combs, shampoo, toothbrushes and toothpaste individually-wrapped bath-size bars of soap, adhesive bandages, and one-gallon-size, zipper-seal plastic bags Baby items are also needed, as well as stuffed animals for children.
