OTTAWA — Amy Bulmer of Ottawa just returned from Joplin, Mo., where her sister is a nurse at the St. John’s Hospital that was severely damaged and some patients and medical staff were killed by the deadly tornado Sunday. Bulmer said many people have jumped to offer their help and Joplin is grateful. But she says Joplin’s needs are changing and there’s no longer as critical need for water and food. Now, Joplin residents have the greatest need for cleanup items including gloves, flashlights, heavy-duty lawn bags, tarps, and gift cards for gasoline and Wal-Mart. The gift cards are especially useful for Joplin because a Sam’s Club was one of the few retailers on Rangeline Road, where some of the heaviest damage occurred, that was spared, she said. That Sams has dropped its membership requirements and has opened to the public and is even offering free prescription drugs to Joplin residents who’ve lost their money and possessions, she said., Medical items are another key need, she said. Money donations to relief agencies working in Joplin are also needed and particularly useful, she said.
