GARNETT – Garnett officials are defending an increase in the number of tickets written along a stretch of Main Street in recent weeks which has cost motorists, mostly truckers, more than $10,000. Police Chief Kevin PeKarek told the Anderson County Review that the increase in tickets isn’t a money-making scheme but a reminder to motorists to drive safely in a dangerous situation. The Review reported that city police have written 76 tickets in the month since the Kansas Department of Transportation closed a stretch of U.S. 59 north of the roundabout for construction and rerouted traffic on Business U.S. 169 in southern Garnett. Most of the tickets have been for speeding and for trucks using part of Main Street that bans commercial truck traffic.
