OTTAWA — The Ottawa VFW and Auxiliary honored veterans during the annual Memorial Day ceremony Monday at Highland Cemetery. The ceremony included a symbolic grave of all those American service personnel who VFW commander Gary Ross said who have died to ensure the rights of free people. Memorial Day has its roots in ceremonies conducted by relatives of killed soldiers shortly after the Civil War, said Paul Kah, VFW quartermaster. He read the original Grand Army of the Republic General Order 11 issued by Gen. John Logan establishing what was then Decoration Day.
