BELTSVILLE, Md. — This was a winter of discontent for the nation’s beekeepers. The massive die-off of the nation’s honeybees continued this winter. About one-third of the honeybees died during the winter, said Jeff Pettis of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s bee lab in Maryland. However, he said the die-off wasn’t necessarily the result of the mysterious colony collapse disorder which has ruined many bee swarms in previous years. There were indications that much of this winter’s kill could have been prevented. The bee deaths show the need for a new project to get more research information into the hands of the nation’s beekeepers in a more timely manner.
