OTTAWA- The weather is unpredictable, but steps can be taken to minimize harm when disaster strikes. Miami County Family and Consumer Sciences Agent Diane Burnett said that people need to have documentation of possessions so that insurance claims can be made more easily. Also important is having the right coverage when it comes to insurance. An emergency fund also needs to be established. No matter the document or the valuable, Burnett said it’s most important that these items are kept off the premises, such as in a safety deposit box in the bank. Other factors to consider are emergency and evacuation plans, such as turning off the gas line in a home. When it’s storm season, Burnett emphasizes that one can never be too prepared.
