KANSAS CITY — The Kansas City Royals looked in their backyard and picked Bubba Starling of Gardner as their first-round draft pick and the fifth overall pick Monday. The fleet-footed, hard-throwing outfielder was an all-around star for Gardner-Edgerton High School in football, basketball and baseball. However, playing at Kaufman Stadium 30 miles from his hometown isn’t a done deal for him. Starling has a scholarship to play football at the University of Nebraska and – in a bad sign for the notoriously cheap Royals management — he has super-agent Scott Boras as his advisor. However, the Royals are still feeling heat 11 years later for failing to snag Kansas City native Albert Pujols, who is an all-star for the St. Louis Cardinals.
