HAMBURG, Iowa — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said at least 300 feet of a weakened Missouri River levee in Atchison County, Mo, has collapsed. The full breach threatens Hamburg, Iowa, and Corps and Hamburg officials are trying to shore up emergency levees to save the city from flooding. At a news conference last night, Kansas City Corps Col. Tony Hoffman says another levee closer to Kansas City has also been breached. He said the giant Gavins Point dam in South Dakota has had to release massive amounts of water, which will increase water levels along the Missouri River, which is at near-historic levels. Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback and Kansas adjutant general Lee Tafanelli visited those areas Monday in Atchison and Doniphan counties threatened by flooding from the river.
