WASHINGTON –- Senators have approved an amendment that would kill most government support for ethanol. The amendment would also open up the U.S. to ethanol imports from other countries by removing the tariff on imported ethanol. U.S. agriculture secretary Tom Vilsack called the vote ill-advised and urged senators to take more time to agriculture and energy officials and farmers to come up with good solutions. Earlier last week, backers of ethanol thought they had saved the subsidies.
