GARNETT — A Garnett ethanol expert said Friday’s vote by the U.S. Senate to strip away many ethanol tax credits won’t have an immediate impact. But Kansas Corn Growers Commission executive director Jere White tells the Anderson County Review that the vote could be an unwelcome political shift. Because there isn’t a similar vote in the U.S. House and because it’s not likely that President Obama, who has called for an increase in U.S. ethanol production, would sign such a bill, White said the Senate vote has no effect. But he said the Congressional mood for cost-cutting bodes ill for U.S. ethanol production, which receives several subsidies. Because of its financial condition, the Garnett ethanol plant would fare better than other plants if those subsidies were repealed, he said.
