AZACILO, Bolivia — A Kansas University engineering student from Carbondale has been in a remote village in Bolivia this summer working on safe drinking water, sanitary latrines and new bathing facilities. Environmental engineering student Emily Robbins is one of eight KU students who are part of KU’s chapter of Engineers Without Borders working in the tiny village of Azacilo, located high in the Andes Mountains at more than 12,000 feet. It’s a four-hour drive along winding mountain roads from the capital city of La Paz. The team is building 27 composting solar latrines in the village and a community shower. They’re also discussing plans to improve the village’s water distribution system.
