GARNETT — The south side of the downtown square of Garnett looks a bit bare these days because there are no sidewalks. Lickteig Construction is replacing the sidewalks in front of several businesses on the south side of the square, will help the city meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. After the Coffee Loft owners began replacing the sidewalks in front of the business, the project snowballed and all of the other business owners signed onto the sidewalk project, said city manager Joyce Martin. The sidewalk project also required some sudden street work. The new curbs are below the surface of Fifth Street, so Martin talked to Killough Construction, which is working on U.S. 59 in and near Garnett, about milling down the street at the curb and adding a layer of asphalt so the street and curb matches. Once the work is completed, the south side will look very nice, she said. Sidewalks are being replaced in several areas of the city.
