LAWRENCE — Lawrence officials, residents and legislators are furious over the plan by the Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services’ plan to close the Lawrence SRS office. The Lawrence Journal-World reported that legislators are planning a public forum, possibly next week, about the closing. On Friday, the SRS announced a series of closings and a reorganization of its offices statewide. The SRS also plans to close its offices at Garnett and Lyndon. State senator Tom Holland, D-Baldwin City, and House Democratic leader Paul Davis of Lawrence said they want answers about why Lawrence was picked for closure. The Journal-World also said that SRS officials have refused to talk to the newspaper. The Lawrence SRS office is one of the larger offices in the state.
