GARNETT — The Garnett Public Library will host a book discussion on the novel . “Gilead” by Marilynne Robinson at 7:30 p.m. July 27. Jane Feuerborn will lead the discussion. The book is set in Gilead, Iowa, in 1956. A minister, John Ames, faces death from heart disease. He decides to leave his son a family history. He tells of his grandfather and father, also named John Ames, also ministers. His grandfather was a fire and brimstone preacher who went to Kansas to fight for abolition fought in the Union army during the Civil war. His father disliked his father’s violent background and became a pacifist preacher. The Ames household, when all three generations lived together, was one of an uneasy truce. Books are available and everyone is welcome.
