FAIRFAX, Va. — Ottawa Police Chief Dennis Butler has been named alumnus of the year by George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. George Mason lauded Butler’s work as Ottawa chief to prevent domestic violence, which has become a model for other law agencies, and setting up a joint domestic-violence task force with the Franklin County Sheriff’s office, the county attorney’s office, the Willow Center, and the Elizabeth Layton Mental Health Center. While he served in the Alexandria, Va., Police Department, he helped set up training and programs to reduce the number of citizen complaints against officers. He also worked with local groups and citizens to improve the department’s community-policing programs. He also started a city-wide government project to increase electronic and computer technology, an effort he’s also been involved with with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department.
