KANSAS CITY — The Missouri River broke through a levee in Carroll County, Mo., east of Kansas City Monday. Aerial recon flights confirmed the extent of the flooding that resulted, said Col. Tony Hofmann, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers commandant of the Kansas City District, during an evening news teleconference. About 250 feet of the levee was breached, and potential exists to block Highway 65 and flood 22,000 acres of farm land, he said. The cause of the breach wasn’t immediately known, he said. Efforts continue to shore up a levee near Elwood and officials continue to monitor a temporary structure built following land slide on a levee in the Sugar Tree levee system north of Kansas City, he said.
