OSAWATOMIE — The Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services has fired the superintendents at the Osawatomie State Hospital and at Larned State Hospital. The Osawatomie Graphic reported that Osawatomie superintendent Greg Valentine and Larned superintendent Robert Connell were told their services were no longer needed. Valentine had been superintendent at Osawatomie since 2005 and Connell had been superintendent at Larned since 2009. All state hospitals have routinely exceeded their licensed capacities. Despite the overcrowding, Osawatomie State Hospital recently received a zero-deficiency survey from federal inspectors. SRS has refused comment. Wes Cole will serve as interim superintendent at Osawatomie.
