OTTAWA — The Ottawa Youth Action Council is rolling out the barrels for what has been a popular fundraiser. The students have made another 15 rain barrels. They’ve made 130 of the rain barrels before, along with educating the public on how to use them and why they’re important, said Ottawa Volunteer Center director Lisa Rivers. Each rain barrel will cost $50. \Half of all proceeds will be donated to a family whose house and belongings were destroyed in the Joplin, Mo., and who’s related to an Ottawa family, she said. The barrels collect rain water than can be used to water plants. The barrels save water and also prevent stormwater from running into area streams. To buy one, e-mail rivers at lrivers@eckan.org or call 242.7450, Extension 7209. Donations will also be accepted. If those are sold, the youths will make another 15, she said.
