TOPEKA- It’s a new month, but the story is the same: jobless rates are not looking good. For counties Franklin, Johnson, Leavenworth, Linn, Miami, and Wyandotte, the unemployment rate for the month of June rose to 6.9 percent from May’s rate of 6.5 percent. At this time last year the rate was at 7.3 percent. Kansas Secretary of Labor Karen Brownlee said there is reason to find optimism in this report. “The positive number in this month’s report is growth in private sector jobs,” Brownlee said. The state’s private sector jobs increased by 5600 over the month. The states total unemployment rate for the month of June was 6.7 percent.
