OTTAWA — Lake Region RC&D is collecting 50-60 new and used bicycles for children and residents for the tornado-ravaged town of Reading. A Lyon County commissioner who was aware of Lake Region’s bicycle recycling program – in which used bicycles that reach landfills are sent to the Ellsworth prison to be repaired by inmates and then redistributed to poor children around the state, asked Lake Region to start collecting bikes for Reading children, said Don Stottlemire, Lake Region chair and Franklin County commission. Many people forget that children also lose their belongings because of tornadoes, and Stottlemire said he hopes getting bicycles will help Reading kids recover. He said he expects bicycles to be delivered in a couple of weeks. Bicycles can be dropped at the Franklin County Recycling Center in Ottawa.
