GARNETT — It may not be gold but it’s still unburied treasure for the city of Garnett. The Anderson County Review reported that Killough Construction has been repaving U.S. 59 between Ottawa and Garnett and uncovered an abandoned storm drain just north of First Avenue in Garnett. And because the city has been trying to deal with flooding on the highway at First Street caused by severe storms, it’s a discovery that made it Christmas in July. City manager Joyce Martin said there was no record of the drain and she says until Killough found it, no one from the city knew it existed and wasn’t on any map. The drain had been buried a long time, she said. The discovery won’t hurt, she said. During the most recent storm, water seemed to drain much more quickly than usual in that area, she said.
