HILLSDALE LAKE — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued a public health advisory for Hillsdale Lake. The KDHE said lab tests show that a blue-green algae bloom is occurring at Hillsdale Lake, the state’s most popular lake. People should avoid wading, skiing or swimming in the lake, especially in areas along shorelines where the water has a definite green tint or unusual odor, the KDHE said. If people see any green surface scum or foaming material floating in the water, people and pets should avoid it. Nor should people drink untreated lake water. Anglers should clean well any fish caught at Hillsdale Lake and eat only the fillet part, KDHE said. Hillsdale Lake remains open and marinas, businesses and campgrounds are not affected by the advisory, the KDHE said. Blue-green algae often happens during times of high heat and humidity.
The algae is mildly toxic for most people – causing allergy-type skin infections and diarrhea and other intestinal upsets, and breathing problems.
